This steps to calories calculator converts your daily step count into calories burned and distance covered. It's the easiest way to see what your everyday movement β€” the walking you do outside the gym β€” actually contributes to your energy balance.

How it works

Calorie burn from walking scales with body weight: roughly 0.57 kcal per kilogram of body weight per 1,000 steps at a normal pace, derived from the measured energy cost of walking in the Compendium of Physical Activities. Distance uses your stride length, estimated as 41.4% of your height (or an average stride if you skip the height field).

Frequently asked questions

Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?

It's a good target but not a magic one β€” the figure originally came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign. A 2022 meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health found most of the mortality benefit arrives by 7,000–9,000 steps a day for adults under 60. More is still better for calorie burn.

Do steps count toward my daily calorie target?

They're part of your activity level. If you picked "sedentary" in the calorie calculator but walk 12,000 steps a day, you're under-counting β€” bump your activity level up a notch instead of adding steps separately.

How accurate are phone step counts?

Modern phones and watches are accurate to within about 5% for normal walking. Counts drift during pushing a trolley, cycling, or very slow shuffling.
